Medication Reviews

It is important that anyone on long-term medication has a regular review. This typically occurs once a year, but may be more often depending on your medical conditions or medication. Your repeat prescription slip has a review date shown, which indicates when the doctor would like to see you next to check your progress.

We will attempt to contact you around your birthday month to arrange your annual LTC (long term condition) review. This may involve a pre-check with one of out nurses (to include for example blood pressure, weight and possibly blood tests - depending on your medication and individual conditions).

You will then be reviewed by one of our Practice Pharmacists, Nurses, or one of the GPs depending on your individual situation.

Some review consultations can be safely done on the phone if you do  not need to be examined in person, but please request a face to face appointment if you prefer to do so.

For safety reasons, we may not be able to continue prescribing for you if you do not have a regular review.

Further Information

Many pharmacists will arrange to collect your prescriptions directly from the surgery. Please make it clear on your prescription request if you have arranged for a pharmacist to do this.

For your convenience we have included a pharmacy as part of Bridgewater House and the Merdien.  The pharmacies, which are located on the ground floor,  are able to dispense all your prescriptions or arrange delivery of your medicines to your home.  Please note that some of the Bridgewater Surgeries' partners are part shareholders in the Pharmacy leases.

It is the policy of Bridgewater Surgeries to prescribe as cost effectively as possible, whilst ensuring that any changes of medication prescribed for an individual patient will meet their clinical situation and need.  This is in accordance with NHS and PCT policy.  Any changes will be based on advice from PCT pharmacists and published evidence.

Prescription Fees

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

  • those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • those who are age exempt
  • those with certain medical conditions
  • More information is available at NHS Choices

NHS Charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

  • Prescription (per item): £9.35
  • 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £108.10
  • 3-month PPC: £30.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

  • General Public - Buy or Renew a PPC On-line

There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website.

Prescribing Policies

Prescribing Policies

As per Bridgewater Surgeries prescribing policies, a maximum of 2 months medication is standard from age 18 - 60 years old (expection for contaceptive, HRT which may be up to six month's supply).

For patients over the age of 60 or those receiving free prescriptions, the practice policy is for a maximum of 1 month's medication to be supplied at a time.

Where possible the practice will try to prescribe batches of prescriptions for 6-12 months for your convenience. This is called REPEAT DISPENSING and allows you to nominate a regular pharmacy who can hold supplies of your prescriptions and issue them on a regular basis until your next review is due.
